Hello guys. I’m a novice – I study business, but last semester I’ve completed a webdev course and I really liked it. I have an intermediate knowledge in HTML and CSS – I can build responsive websites with forms, basic animations and I also have a tiny bit of experience in implementing plugins (I’ve only used jQuery so far). Here are a few pictures of my final project: https://imgur.com/a/Et11q7s (it’s not the prettiest but oh well).
I’ve always wanted to start an online business, and now that I’ve have some free time, a little bit of experience and a newfound love for web design / development I believe it would be the right time to try myself in this field.
I’ve read quite a few articles about “easy-to-use”, subscription based platforms like Shopify, but I’d rather use an open source alternative like Magento to save on expenses and gain a deeper knowledge in developing an online store. (Or should I use WooCommerce?)
I know that I still have to learn A LOT before launching my site – however, I’m not exactly sure where to start.
For the design part I believe Bootstrap would be a good start – as far as I’m concerned it’s not that complicated and powerful enough to create a nice site.
The “back end” part is where I’m utterly confused – I have basically no experience in server side languages. Since Magento is PHP based, I figure I should start with that – but I’m really not sure how much knowledge do I actually need to set up and operate a small webstore.
Please keep in mind that although I like to learn coding, I realize that I don’t have enough time to become a “real” web developer – my aim is to set up the described project.
TLDR: Having some intermediate knowledge in HTML / CSS, what should I learn to be able to set up and operate a small eCommerce site with Magento Open Source?
